Explore Seattle’s International District

May 20, 2017 By MetroDemic

The newest MetroDemic course just went live in Seattle’s International District!

Chinese Gate Seattle International DistrictIf you live in Seattle, you know that the International District is an explosion of tastes!  Dim sum, Chinese bakeries, poke, bubble tea… it’s all there!

To help counteract the 3000 calories you are likely to consume when you visit this beautiful area near downtown Seattle, why not play a 90 minute game of MetroDemic with your friends?  You’ll explore this colorful district on foot as you search for outbreak locations and answer trivia questions to save victims from a deadly epidemic that is attacking the city!

When selecting our site for the Seattle game, we considered a number of areas including Seattle Center (Space Needle), the heart of downtown, lower Queen Anne, Pioneer Square, and Fremont.  What we liked about the International District is that it is a fantastic place to explore on the weekends, but there isn’t much to actually do there besides eat.

This area of Seattle has a fascinating history ranging from secret Chinese societies, being a home for Bruce Lee, playing a role in the Yukon gold rush, to sketchy crime scenes in the past. It’s one of those areas of the country that you can just feel the historic vibes!

We had a fantastic time designing this course and hope that your family, friends, and co-workers like our work. Get out there and save some lives in Seattle!

Lawn Bowling for Company Team Building

June 19, 2016 By MetroDemic

Jefferson Park Lawn BowlingThis week, I had the opportunity to participate in a fun team building event at the Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club in Seattle. Lawn bowling is a British game that is very similar to the Italian game of bocce. You throw a small white ball across the lawn, and then teams compete to roll a larger (and heavier) ball closest to the small ball. The main difference is that the balls for lawn bowling are weighted on one side, which gives you the ability to hook your shot in from the left or right.

As a company team building event, I though this worked out really nice.  We arrived at Jefferson Park at around 2pm and gathered in the club house.  At around 2:15PM, once our group arrived, our hosts for the day stood up and gave us an introduction on how to play the game.  For the next two hours, we simply had fun a great time enjoying the sun, rolling balls across the ground, talking a little smack, and being together as a team.

Losing at Lawn BowlingNobody took the game too seriously.  At any given point a few people would be hanging out on the park benches enjoying a beverage when it was most likely their turn. The views of Seattle from the park was absolutely stunning and I think we were all just thrilled not to be working!

I would recommend Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling for groups with 16-24 people since you need 8 people for each match.  There isn’t much physical exertion required so it is a good team building activity for all abilities and ages.

A few tips that I would bring up for group organizers who decide to book this event are:

  • Bring plenty of food and beverages.  They have a basic kitchen there if you need a freezer, fridge, or sink, but as for food you are on your own. Our group ran out of food and to order a couple of pizzas.
  • Bring funny hats. They have a collection of interesting hats that can be borrowed, but you might want to suggest people bring their own since they’ll be out in the sun (hopefully) for a couple of hours.
  • Pay attention to the introduction provided by the hosts.  Half of our group was chatting while they explained the rules and didn’t know what to do once they said we could get started.
  • Arrange for rides. Our office is in downtown Seattle, and this was a 15-minute car ride away.  It is always a burden to ask employees to pay for parking and drive their own cars, so I would recommend just hiring a few Lyft drivers to take care of things.  That also plays out better if you decide to include alcohol as part of your event.

Lawn Bowling BallsOverall, I think lawn bowling and similar activities make for a great team building activity. They’re simple, inexpensive, and fun.  The goal for this kind of event is just to get people together outside of the office as a way to foster better relationships.  Our group left with a smile, it was a great afternoon out!

The Best Walking Tour of Pike Place Market

December 7, 2015 By MetroDemic

I had the opportunity to join up with Seattle Free Walking Tours and tour guide Jake and Becky Schlack for a tour of the Pike Place Market in early December.  My ‘day job” company decided to schedule a team-building event in Seattle that was close to the office and nice for a group of ten people.

Pike Place Walking Tour

After having toured a dozen cities over the summer to develop MetroDemic courses, it was an absolute treat getting to sit back and marvel at Jake’s expertise on all things Seattle!  He has that extremely rare gift of being able to make local history both educational and funny, I wasn’t bored for a single minute on his tour of Pike Place Market.

One of my favorite things about Seattle Free Walking Tours was the connections he had with the local vendors in Pike Place Market. AKA: Free food!  Smoked salmon, apple slices, jalapeno jam, and other treats were all part of the fun.  It was obvious that Jake has worked hard to build a relationship with the local shops and has a lot of respect for the business they do.

As a person who works 1 block from the Pike Place Market, I also loved the very practical secrets he revealed. A secret atrium that never gets crowded. The cleanest bathrooms. The drink that is only served at the oldest Starbucks location.  I walk through the market all the time and was discovering all kinds of new information.

If you’re looking for a guided tour of the Pike Place Market, these guys are the best. I loved what they had to offer and wish Jake and his wife all the best in their business! Give them a try next time you’re in downtown Seattle.

Disclaimer: We get absolutely nothing from this recommendation. Jake and his wife just seem like really good people and we are happy to recommend them.
